AMANDA MARTHA PARKES PALMER GALES, 74, Chula Vista, CA, a suburb of San Diego, CA, formerly of Memphis, TN, died Sunday, May 25, 2008. Born August 20, 1933, she was the youngest daughter of Henry L. Parkes, Sr. and Cora Leonia Scott Parkes and the former wife of Richard Palmer, Sr. The 1951 graduates of Booker T. Washington High School were the parents of four children, Richard, Jr. (Lisa), Robin (deceased), Russell and Rhonda L. Palmer. Amanda was the sister of Cora L. Gleese (Rev. James L.-deceased), Mary Emma Parkes Jones (Thomas E. -both deceased), and Henry L. Parkes, Jr. (deceased), (Myrtle) and Lois Jean Palmer Alexander (Johnny Ace-deceased). Amanda was the aunt of Walter Samuel Leatherwood (deceased), Patricia Gleese Gates (Reginald), Deborah Gleese Barnes (Calvin "Duke"), Judy Gleese Brown Jones (Gerald), Thomas Earl Jones III, Constance Marie Jones, Benjamin Levi Jones, Joan Parkes Brown (Sergesker-deceased), Henry Lemuel "Lem" Parkes III, Janet Alexander McClora, Glenn Alexander (deceased), Reginald Carl Alexander, Jerome Alexander (Vanessa) and Heather Durham. Amanda was the niece of Emma Louise Scott and William Washburn (Pearl-deceased) and a host of other relatives and friends. Amanda grew up in the Metropolitan Baptist Church and LeMoyne Gardens neighborhood, where she attended most activities at the Metropolitan Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Rev. S. A. Owen and she like to talk of a group of her girlfriends including Nellie Peeples Tate, Andrewnetta Hawkins Jones and Geraldine (Jerry) Veasey Green, who called themselves "the Unholy Four". The Memphis family hour will be today, Saturday, June 7 at 977 Lenow Park Drive, #102 (College Park Subdivision) from 1-8 p.m. Final services are to be held at the Community Mortuary, 855 Broadway in Chula Vista, CA on June 7 at 4 p.m. Amanda's family sincerely thanks all persons who extended all acts of condolences in any form.
