OBITUARIES

 

 

DOROTHY BILBREW MYERS, 73, retired Memphis City Schools educator and owner of Weddings and Things Florist, transitioned on September 25, 2010, in Memphis, TN. Mrs. Myers was born in Madison County, MS and relocated to Memphis in 1949 along with her siblings and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bennie (Cora) Bilbrew, Sr. After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School and LeMoyne College, she began her career as a teacher in the Memphis City Schools’ system. Soon afterwards, she obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from Memphis State University. Recognized as Who’s Who Among American Teachers, she served as a dedicated and committed Memphis City Schools teacher for over 37 years. Nurturing her passion for decorating and nature, Mrs. Myers studied floral design and opened Weddings and Things Florist in 1981. She was often seen around ‘The Shop’ in her big sun hats tending to the gardens or on location for some special event in order to insure an elegant occasion was seamlessly delivered. As Owner and Principle Designer of Weddings and Things, her creativity and business acumen were recognized by the Black Business Association of Memphis as Outstanding Woman-Owned Business of 1986. Qualities which characterized her life include a deep devotion to God and family, civic leader and avid supporter of community events, compassion for and work with the under privileged, a strong commitment to education and children and advocacy for high moral and ethical standards. She is survived by her husband, Rufus W. Myers; daughters, Stephanie (Robert) Ferreira and Melodie Myers; granddaughter, Dorothy Grace Ferreira; grandson, Myers Stephen Ferreira and a host of other relatives and friends.
