1962 Booker T. Washington team won City, National titles. Pictured are members of the 1962 Booker T. Washington High School basketball team. Team members include: (front, from left) Robert Cobb, Charles Powell, Sherman Yates, Coach William "Bill" Fowlkes, Hershel Boone, Edward Robertson and Willie Ward. (back, from left) Asst. Principal Joe Westbrooks, Julian Banks, Marion Brewer, Louis McCoy, Ronald Ester, Walter Cummings, Leroy Weakley and Principal J. D. Springer. The team won the City Championship and the Regional Championship, held in Memphis that year. The National Invitational Interscholastic Basketball Tournament for African American schools was held from 1941 to 1967. In 1962, the tournament was held in Nashville and BTW defeated Carter-Paramore High School from Quincy, Fla., to win the title and finish the season 32-1.
