OBITUARIES

 

 

MRS. SAMMIE D. FARMER WHITE, 80 years of age, died at home in Anchorage, Alaska, on May 22, 2010. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 12, 1929. Her parents were the late Katie J. and Sam Farmer. She attended Booker T. Washington School. On. March 5, 1949, in DeSoto, Mississippi, she married the late Charlie White, Retired SSgt. U.S. Army. She worked for many years at the Wonder Snack Food Company before it closed. After that she worked as a nanny and housekeeper and retired in 1999. She divided her time between her children and alternately living in Tennessee, Georgia and Alaska. Her favorite thing to do was to help others in whatever way possible. She especially loved blessing babies and little children. In addition, she loved to cook and was very skilled in arts and crafts. When she lived with her son, she attended Cummings Street Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee, and when with her daughter she attended Spirit Life Fellowship Church and recently Anchorage City Church, both in Anchorage, Alaska. She loved the Lord with all of her heart. As she was passing from this life to be with the Lord,, she worshipped and praised God and decreed Psalm 23. Her children are the late Charles S. White, Retired SSgt. U.S. Army of Tennessee and Patricia K. White Underwood of Alaska. She has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, respectively, to include Charles A. White (son and daughters) of Tennessee, Winny Mylius of Germany, April D. Underwood, Kevin E. Underwood (son), Eugene D. Underwood (son), Edward J. Underwood, Brian E. Underwood, Keith P. Underwood, all of Alaska, Charjeana B. White (daughter) of Georgia, and Erdaija White of Tennessee. She leaves her family and a vast host of friends who loved her dearly. Our Moma, Grandma and Friend was the Best of the Best. She endeavored to always treat people the way she wanted to be treated. And that was with the love of God. Her kindness and thoughtful heart is her legacy. She was the last of her generation and her family will continue her legacy. The funeral services will be held at R. S. Lewis and Sons Funeral Home, 374 Vance Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38126, on Wednesday, June 2 at 12 p.m. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at National Cemetery.
